Hundreds came out on a brisk late summer day on September 17 to celebrate the new Delaware SPCA and the positive changes we've made.
Kids delighted in the moonbounce, games and face painting, while dogs competed in musical hoops and took a romp in the off-leash bark park. All attendees enjoyed free food, tours of our new spay/neuter clinic, and visiting with our adoptable pets. It was a fun day for all, and an opportunity to learn about the changes that have taken place at the Delaware SPCA.
In 2008, new leadership brought about a transformation. Gone were the old school ways of thinking, giving way to a progressive animal welfare organization which is dedicated to preserving life wherever possible and eliminating animal suffering at its source.
What Changed?
- Our Euthanasia Policy - The Delaware SPCA has gone from being an organization with a high euthanasia rate and minimal animal care, to an organization that gives all animals, regardless of medical condition or age, a chance for a better life. Only those that are too slck to be treated or are a danger to the public are humanely euthanized.
- Improved Care for Animals - Animals that are sick or injured receive the medical attention they need. Many animals need more than routine care, and in conjunction with our veterinary partners, we insure that they get what they need. We have also created and accept donations to The Second Chance Fund, which helps pay for non-routine medical expenses.
- Focus on Spay & Neuter - Animal neutering is a top priority, aimed at reducing homelessness at its source. We opened a brand new, state of the art Spay/Neuter Clinic at our Stanton Shelter in 2009. The clinic is the only high-quality, high-volume, low-cost clinic in the state, based on a successful national model developed by Humane Alliance.

What's Next?
- Spay/Neuter Expansion - this fall, we are expanding the Georgetown shelter's clinic to also become a high-quality, high-volume, low-cost clinic.
- Building Improvements - We are currently raising money to build a free roaming cat room and outdoor dog runs at our Stanton shelter.
- New Facilities - Both of our shelters are in desperate need of updating. In the coming year, we will lay out a plan for renovations to improve safety and bring our shelters up to modern standards.
- Strategic Focus - We've just completed a strategic plan that will guide us over the next 5 years toward our goals of eliminating animal homelessness, strengthening our animal cruelty program, gaining financial stability, and improving our facilities. We hope you will help us get there!
