Beautiful Joe

Beautiful Joe, as he has been named by our staff, is a 4 month old pit bull puppy who has stolen our hearts.  It may not look like it, but Joe is looking good and on the road to recovery.

Joe was found as a stray by one of our cruelty officers.  He suffered from a severe case of Demodectic mange.  Different from Sarcoptic mange, Demodectic mange is not contagious.  All dogs can have demodectic mites, but the mites only cause disease when an abnormal immune system allows their numbers to get out of control.

Joe was covered head to toe in sores and his skin was itchy, inflamed and infected. He was listless and in extreme discomfort.  Until he came into our care, he suffered in silence with no one to make the pain and itch go away.  Joe yearned for human contact, but being touched was very painful.

We did not know if we could save Joe, but we were sure going to try.  Our veterinarian immediately administered medications and medicated baths to kill the mites, in addition to antibiotics to prevent secondary infections.

After a week of treatment, you could tell Joe was feeling better.  Today, after 4 weeks of treatment, his sores have mostly disappeared and the mites are gone.  His hair is starting to grow in, and we can almost imagine the beautiful coat he will have to match his bright blue eyes.  Most importantly, Joe is acting like a 4 month old puppy should – happy and playful.  He scoots around the office after toys, delights in his chewies, and is so happy for the attention he gets from staff and volunteers, including a good scratch!

Beautiful Joe still has a long recovery ahead. He will likely require several months of treatment.  In the meantime, he'll be safe, comfortable and showered with attention.  We'll keep you posted of his progress.

If you would like to help with Joe's recovery, as well as other animals like Joe that have special medical needs, please consider donating today.
