The Delaware SPCA is a private, non-profit organization and as such the services it provides are only made possible with the charitable support of the community. Some of these valuable services include:
Adoption and Placement The Delaware SPCA provides placement and adoption of dogs and cats for residents of the state of Delaware. Ability to place an animal is dependent on the animal's health and temperament and space limitations in the shelter. For more information on adoption and placement please see our "Adoptions" page. Neutering Low-cost spay/neuter services are provided to Delaware residents at our New Castle and Sussex shelters. Neutering your pet not only helps reduce the number of homeless pets brought into shelters but can also limit or even prevent certain medical and behavioral problems. For more information and current prices click here. Cruelty Prevention Delaware SPCA officers provide a range of animal control services to residents of the City of Wilmington and also enforce state cruelty statutes throughout New Castle and Sussex counties. More information on these services and animal welfare laws can be found here. Humane Education Our humane education department provides informative and entertaining education programs to Delaware residents of all ages. Programs and classes can be tailored to suit your group's needs and schedule. For more information click here or contact Scott Vogel at (302) 998-2291 or email him at education@delspca.org. Lost & Found Stray cats found within New Castle and Sussex counties are accepted at the Delaware SPCA's New Castle and Sussex shelters. A nominal donation is requested at intake to help provide for their care and feeding. If you have lost or found an animal you can file a report with the dispatchers at either of the Delaware SPCA's shelters. For more information on lost and found services click here. If you have lost an animal we do request that you visit your local shelter before submitting a lost report to make sure your animal is not at the shelter. Please keep in mind that due to similarities within a breed it is not always possible to identify an animal by description alone, and that it is ultimately the owner or caretaker's responsibility to locate and positively identify their animal. Dog control is handled statewide, with the exception of within the City of Wilmington, by Delaware Animal Care & Control, who are available at 1-(888) 352-7722. Dog Licensing Delaware state dog licenses are available at the New Castle and Sussex shelters. A current rabies vaccination certificate will need to be provided at the time of purchase. Licenses cost between $4 and $19 and are cash only. All dogs 6 months of age and older are required to have a current rabies vaccination and state license. Dogs residing within the City of Wilmington also require a City dog license which can be purchased at the Delaware Humane Association. Rabies Clinics The Delaware SPCA holds annual low-cost rabies clinics. Details are usually provided through local media outlets in the month of January.
